On Saturday 17 May 2014 Italian alpinists Nives Meroi and Romano Benet summited Kangchenjunga (8.586m), the third highest mountain in the world. Their ascent marks a great return to the Himalaya and is also an important and unique journey.

At 9:40am local time on 19 May Russian alpinist Denis Urubko reached the summit of Kangchenjunga from the north, while Italy's Marco Camandona summited yesterday from the south as did Spain's Carlos Soria. This is the 75-year-old's 12th 8000er.

After three days of searching the rescue operation on Everest has been called off today. The official death toll is 13 Sherpa dead and 3 missing. The entire spring mountaineering season is now uncertain.

In the early hours of this morning an avalanche swept down the flanks of Everest on the Nepalese side of the mountain. At least six Sherpa have died, while numerous other climbers are reported missing.
