Just before the toll point on the road into Rautal, a surprisingly steep pillar rises up on the righthand side of the valley, jutting out from the north face of Paresberg. It is neither too difficult to see nor too far from the road to not be climbed, so we gave it a go. The first two thirds climb of compact grey rock, and this is then followed by a steep finish on yellow dolomite which guarantees some varied and fun climbing.

On 13 June my brother Manuel and I climbed a logical and natural line up this feature. The result is a rather bold, classic route. For long stretches the rock is of a surprisingly good quality, providing numerous possibilities placing trad gear.

If you’re in search of adventurous mountain climbing on a secluded peak, you’ll find this face and Streichelzoo right up your street. If solitude and isolation is what you’re after, and are not afraid of adventure, the steep rock pillar on Paresberg is ideal.
