37-year-old Gabriel Perenzoni and 26-year-old Nicola Castagna from Italy have completed the collection of all 82 alpine 4000m summits catalogued on the UIAA's official list.

The two trainee mountain guides set off without much fanfare on 4 May on their Altavia 4000 project and during the first three weeks they skinned up the first 30 mountains, before taking a week off to rest and above all wait for conditions to improve at altitude.

Using a car to travel to the mountains, they then set their sights on the "wonderful ridge lines" up the remaining 50 mountains, climbed with both intelligence and dogged determination. They ascended some of the most emblematic ascents in the entire Alps such as the Peuterey Ridge, the Brouillard Ridge, the Matterhorn and the Grandes Jorasses Ridge. They completed their tour two days ago, by ascending Schrekhorn and Lauterhaarhorn in Switzerland's Bernese Oberland.

More details will follow in due course, at present the mountaineers are enjoying a well-deserved rest, conscious of the fact that they have completed "a great adventure." As they themselves wrote two days ago, in the only summit book they found during the last 80 days.
