On Sunday and Monday the South Tyrolean mountaineer Simon Gietl completed a winter enchainment of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo in the Italian Dolomites, linking Cima Ovest, Cima Grande, Cima Piccola, Punta di Frida and Cima Piccolissima on his own. The 35-year-old ascended the same routes he climbed in March 2017 with Germany’s Michi Wohlleben when he completed the first winter linkup of these five iconic peaks, this time though he climbed solo, stopping for a bivouac between Cima Ovest and Cima Grande.

The traverse comes in the wake of numerous important ascents carried out in the past, notably two which are highly representative of his form of mountaineering: the first ascent of Pandora on the Mt Pordoi with Vittorio Messini in mid-December 2019, and his solo first ascent of Can you hear me? up Cima Scotoni in 2018. An interview with all the details will follow in due course.
