Buildering in Scotland: after the first ascent of a hand crack below a bridge in Edinburgh, Robbie Philips has now returned to make a free solo ascent.

"You have to put the gear in, on lead. And that’s it. That’s the rule. If you don’t do it that way, your ascent doesn’t count." These words apply just as much today as they did when Stevie Haston uttered them years ago. Bearing this in mind, a few days back Robbie Phillips returned to his The Troll Toll below the Meggetland New Bridge in Edinburgh which he’d recently first ascended with pre-placed gear in order to climb the route in the finest of styles. Spotted by a friend in a punctured inflatable dinghy, the 29-year-old Scotsman crossed the river straight off, producing the route’s first shallow water solo. With crack climbing gloves though… ;-)
