Jeff Lowe's Metanoia

In winter 1991 leading American alpinist Jeff Lowe embarked up the North Face of the Eiger in Swtizerland, on his own, via a direct line no one had ever attempted before. He climbed a direct line between the Japanese and Harlin routes without bolts and fixed ropes, and faced utterly adverse conditions before taking a near-fatal fall on his last day on the face. What resulted from 27 February to 4 March 1991 was an audacious, groundbreaking ascent, both in terms of style and commitment.

In many ways the ascent changed his life forever and prepared him for the greatest adventure he'd ever been on - the climb of his life, as as he slowly lost all of his physical abilities and faced his own mortality. His story is told in this award-winning film directed by Jim Aikman.

Widely recognised as one for the strongest alpinists of his generation, Lowe received the Piolet d'Or Carrière 2017. He passed away aged 67 on 24 August 2018.
