Satone Yoshida sends Sharma's Three Degrees of Separation (9a+) at Céüse

For years, Chris Sharma blazed the trail so blisteringly that it feels as if the pack is only now beginning to catch up with some of his performances. The latest to tread in his footsteps is Satone Yoshida, the 22‑year‑old Japanese competition climber who, after sending Bibliographie at Céüse in August 2025, has now sent his second 9a+: Sharma's nearby Three Degrees of Separation.

The route was originally bolted by Arnaud Petit and freed by Sharma almost two decades ago, in 2007, after the American straightened out the line past three futuristic dynos.

Adam Ondra made the first repeat in 2015 and described the sequence as containing "some of the craziest moves I've ever seen," while Lucien Martinez completed the third ascent in 2019. Jules Marchaland made the fourth ascent in June 2024, and Matteo Marobin the fifth two months later.

Much to his own surprise, Yoshida has now made the sixth ascent. Initially he was worried that he'd be penalised on the enormous dynos by his 166 cm height and 173 cm arm span, but after figuring out his own beta, he reached the chains on only his seventh attempt, after just four days of effort. The 2025 Lead bronze medalist has described his redpoint as "one of the best climbs of my life."
