Janja Garnbret onsights two 8c's in a day at Osp in Slovenia

Last Friday Janja Garnbret had what she herself described as "a perfect day", after onsighting not just one but two 8c's at the enormous Osp cave in Slovenia. The routes in question are two hugely overhanging stamina tests, Osapska pošast and Working class hero. While the latter was originally graded 8b+, after a hold broke an upgrade to 8c was suggested.

Regardless of this detail, Planetmountain happend to be at the crag on the very same day and obviously stopped to watch the ascents; the ease and nonchalance with which the 26-year-old double Olympic Champion climbed these two routes was both astonishing and inspiring.

Garnbret made history in 2021 when she became the first woman in the world to onsight 8c, Fish Eye and American Hustle at Oliana in Spain, and after having onsighted Popolni mrk at nearby Mišja peč in early February, with these last two faultless ascents she has brought her onsight tally to 5.

8c onsight was first achieved in 2004 by Japan’s Yuji Hirayama on White Zombie at the Baltzola cave in Spain. While in the ensuing years other men and women have followed suit, it still constitutes a level of mastery reserved to the select few.
