Jakob Schubert makes second ascent of 9A boulder problem Mount Doom
Jakob Schubert has made the second ascent of Mount Doom, the 9A boulder problem in Austria's Maltatal. The bloc adds an 8-9 move intro, graded 8B+/C in its own right, to the 8B+ problem Hide and Sick and was established in February 2025 by fellow countryman Nicolai Užnik. Schubert described the problem as being "An absolutely amazing line! Long, steep, crimpy and sustained until the top - so very much my style."
According to the 34-year-old, difficulties were compounded when Janja Garnbret accidentally "created a new mini crux by breaking a key hold". He explained "It took me about two days to figure out a new beta for that lower sequence which kept on costing me nerves until the very end. After 8 days I somehow got it done though with one of the most epic fights I ever had on a boulder."
Mount Doom is Schubert's second 9A boulder problem after repeating Alphane at Chironico in December 2023.
