24-year-old Nicolai Užnik has made the first ascent of Mount Doom, a 9A boulder problem in Maltatal, Austria. According to preliminary details published on 8a.nu, the problem adds an 8-9 move intro, graded 8B+/C in its own right, which then tops out along Hide and Sick (8B+). Užnik completed the intro into the stand in January and then needed another 8-9 sessions to finish the climb.

Užnik is a seasoned competition climber and won gold at the European Bouldering Championships in 2022. Outdoors, he has climbed numerous 8C boulders, including the 8C+ Emotional Landscapes. Mount Doom is undoubtedly his hardest ascent to date and, if confirmed, joins an elite group of boulder problems worldwide at this difficulty level.
