On 22 February Spain’s Alberto Ginés López climbed his hardest route to date, El Bon Combat at Cova de Ocell close to Barcelona. First ascended by Chris Sharma in 2015 and repeated, among others, by Jakob Schubert (2018), Felipe Camargo (2019) and Jorge Díaz-Rullo (2020).
López required just 6 sessions spread between December and February to clip the anchor of the climb which was originally graded 9b, but which he feels is more akin to 9a+.
The 23-year-old won the Lead World Cup last year and became the first-ever sport climbing Olympic champion at Tokyo 2020. He has previously climbed a series of other 9a's and El Bon Combat now checks in as "one of the best routes I’ve ever climbed."
