Valle d'Aosta ice climbing updates

A flurry of new routes in Italy's Valle di Cogne, Valle d'Aosta
As previously reported, cold conditions in Northern Italy at the end of February and the start of March resulted in a flurry of new ice routes appearing in the Valle di Cogne, underlining its importance as one of the major ice climbing areas in Europe.

Highlights include the first ascents of Doppio rhum III/5/M7+ at the hands of M. Farina, E. Marlier, Marco Farina and M. Bernardi in Valeille, the splendid two-pitch D'ahorna III/5+, 70m close to Parletoa, and the first ascent of nine new icefalls close to Vielles (Cogne). All pitches vary in length between 30-70m, have been equipped with bolt-belays or use thread belays on trees, and are therefore ideal for beginners.
