Valle d'Aosta ice climbing updates
A flurry of new routes in Italy's Valle di Cogne, Valle d'Aosta
|As previously reported, cold conditions in Northern Italy at the end of February and the start of March resulted in a flurry of new ice routes appearing in the Valle di Cogne, underlining its importance as one of the major ice climbing areas in Europe. |
Highlights include the first ascents of Doppio rhum III/5/M7+ at the hands of M. Farina, E. Marlier, Marco Farina and M. Bernardi in Valeille, the splendid two-pitch D'ahorna III/5+, 70m close to Parletoa, and the first ascent of nine new icefalls close to Vielles (Cogne). All pitches vary in length between 30-70m, have been equipped with bolt-belays or use thread belays on trees, and are therefore ideal for beginners.
