A recent phone call home by Diego Fregona brings fresh news about the Italian-Polish Makalu expedition, led by Himalayan veteran Piotr Pustelnik (ten 8000m peaks). The expedition has deposited gear at 6000m and have fixed ropes up to Camp 1 at 6500m. They plan to ascend to Makalu La and Camp 2 at 7200m shortly, before returning to base camp to recuperate, before pushing back up to Camp 2 and then on to the summit. Currently the weather is poor with high winds blowing across the mountain.

Fregona also mentioned the robbery during the walk-in and confirmed that only money and camera equipment had been stolen. News from Kathmandu reports of tension and curfews.
