The successful Italian Cho Oyu expedition “Roma 2000” presented a insightful balance of the post-monsoon season of Cho Oyu.

After an introduction by Giorgio Mallucci which talked about the expedition itself, Enrico Bernieri discussed the outcome of the Cho Oyu season. The Roman expedition spent 40 days at Cho Oyu and in that period over 200 mountaineers and a total of 23 expeditions attempted the normal route. Only 40 mountaineers successfully summited.

Cho Oyu is widely considered to be an "easy" 8000m peak, but nevertheless it claimed victims this season. Two Sherpas and a Polish mountaineer died, there were 5 or 6 cases of frostbite and one case of paralysis due to cerebral oedema. Of the 16 members belonging to the Roman expedition, 3 summited. They calculated that each member, on average, lost 7 kg during their stay.

The geologist Massimo Pecci discussed the scientific research carried out by the expedition. Ice samples were collected at various altitudes for analysis and should help give insight into levels of pollution and radioactivity. This is the first research of its kind to be carried out in this region.
