Janja Garnbret the great crowned Boulder World Champion 2023

It's difficult to put into words precisely how impeccable Janja Garnbret was in the 2023 World Championship, but raw statistics do go some way to indicate the Slovenian's astounding form: all 4 tops in the final, completed flash, all 4 tops in the semifinal, completed flash and - unlike any other athlete - all 5 tops in the qualification.

This imperious, unimaginable, faultless performance earned Garnbret the great - or the GOAT as she is often described - her third Boulder World Champion title after Innsbruck in 2018 and Hachioji in 2019. While it's difficult to describe her brief and ruthlessly efficient climbs, the fact that they were rewarded with a well-deserved standing ovation by the packed crowed in Bern this evening speaks louder than words.

Put simply, the 23-year-old was power and poetry in motion and since she got absolutely nothing wrong, none of her opponents stood a realistic chance. France's rising star Oriane Bertone got closest to this perfection, completing 3 tops and 4 zones in 7 attempts to claim become vice world champion, while Brooke Raboutou radiated joy with her 2 tops and 4 zones to claim the bronze medal.

Commenting immediately after her win, Garnbret explained "The boulders were tricky, so it was easy to fall, but today I was ‘the right Janja’, as I like to call it, where I was in my own world and my own bubble. I didn’t hear or see anything because I was just in the present moment and just enjoying myself on the wall, so I didn’t doubt that I would fall once because I was just climbing and enjoying."
