| On19 July 2001 a group of young mountaineers from Lecco, Italy will depart for the Ogre Thumb, Karakorum, Pakistan. Entitled Rock Summer 2001 and comprised of Simone Pedeferri, Marco Vago, Matteo Castelnuovo, Alberto Marazzi, and Giuseppe Lafranconi, the expedition plans to climb the SE Face of Ogre Thumb, a splendid 1000m granite pillar situated close to colossal Ogre III and Latok. At present there are only two existing routes, an American and an Italian, and the team hopes to add a new line using only trad gear and climbing as much as possible free. One of the main problems will be the altitude, as the pillar starts at 4600m and reaches 6000m. The team plans to reach the pillar on 25/26 July and has about a fortnight for the ascent. The best of luck! | ![]() Press office: Andrea Bonaventura T/F 335-5800271 e mail: abonave@tin.it |
