Summer 1956. The Austrians Fritz Moravec, Josef Larch and Hans Willenpart tackle the 8035m high giant called Gasherbrum II. The 13th highest mountain in the world is, in technical terms, still virgin. That Saturday 7 July, 55 years ago, GII presented itself from its most splendid side, its most gentle. The weather was magnificent, the sweeping views unforgettable. As unforgettable and emotional as the first time ever on this summit.

Winter 2011. This year Gasherbrum II conceded herself for the first time in winter, in completely different conditions. And not only because it was immensly colder. This time the summit, on 2 February, was reached by an international team. Italy, USA and Kazakhstan. Simone Moro, Cory Richards and Denis Urubko... geopolitics may change, but emotions never...
