Aiguille du Midi footbridge replaced after 70 years

After 70 years of service, the iconic 16-meter brige that connects the two summits of Aiguille du Midi in the Mont Blanc massif has been replaced by a new walkway.

For four months now, a maintenance project of considerable scale has been underway on the Aiguille du Midi above Chamonix: the replacement of the famous 16-meter bridge that connects the two summits.

The new walkway has been designed to withstand winds of up to 254 km/h and was transported to the site by helicopter to replace the previous one, which was nearly 70 years old.

The crew responsible for the work are operating at an altitude of 3800 meters, where temperatures can drop to -20°C, with an almost constant wind making the cold feel even more biting. Given the hazardous environment, extremely precise preparation and logistical planning are essential.

Currently, the goal is to finish the work around December 15th, in time for the reopening of the cable car, which is scheduled for December 20th.
