Starting from Lecco, the Bouldering World Cup will include twelve finalists instead of eight. The rule amendment, made by the International Council for Competition, comes in the wake of last week's first stage held at Fiera di Primiero, where for the first time only eight athletes qualified for the Final instead of the usual 20.

The ICC's decision swiftly takes into account considerations made by athletes, routesetters, coaches, organisers, spectators and the media. Apart from being extremely quick, it was felt that a Final comprised of only eight athletes significantly increased the route setter's problems. Since the Buoldering World Cup, unlike the Difficulty, has only one qualification round, the resulting boulders had to be extremely difficult, enabling few athletes to demonstrate their ability.

Lecco starts next Wednesday. It should be a good one.
