Tania Matsuka and Monica Sancho climbing Wild Country (6a, 265m) Telendos, Kalymnos, Greece (Urs Odermatt & Peter Keller 22/05/2010)
In April 2008 the Swiss climbers Urs Odermatt and Peter Keller travelled to Kalymno or, to be precise, the small isalnd Telendos, where they established circa 50 new routes by creating the sectors Glaros and Pescatore before carrying out the first ascent of Wings for Life, a 250m route with difficulties up to 5c. Obvioulsy this "plaisir" climbing - read moderate grades and good bolting - proved enticing, so much so that in its short history the route hasd alraedy been climbed over 400 times.
With this in mind the two climbers returned to the island last May to establish Wild Country, a 265m route with difficulties up to 6a which promises to become another instant classic... during the first 10 days the route was reapeated a staggering 20 times! Climbers can obvioulsy sign the summit book when they get to the top, but there are no prizes for guessing the British company which sponsored this initiative!
