Riccardo Scarian makes Drumtime F.A. 9a

Riccardo Scarian, fresh from his ascent of Bain de sang, has successfully made the first ascent of Drumtime, his 40m project at Fonzaso, N. Italy, which combines the first section of "Gladiatore" (8c+) with the second half of "Diabloluna" (8c).

One (great) ascent leads to the next. Riccardo Scarian, fresh from his ascent of Bain de sang, has successfully made the first ascent of Drumtime, his 40m project at Fonzaso, N. Italy, which combines the first section of "Gladiatore" (8c+) with the second half of "Diabloluna" (8c).

Riccardo “Sky” Scarian needed roughly thirty attempts spread out over four months to free the smooth overhanging wall and bulge, and despite three holds breaking, success came about unexpectedly on 14 March. This is one of the few 9a's in Italy and Scarian has put forward the following: "I've thought about the grade for a long time and, although my maths isn't the best, after adding up a couple of numbers I've come to the following conclusion: if Diaboluna is a confirmed 8c, and Gladiatore is 8c+, considering my fast ascent of Bain de sang, a 9a (now perhaps 8c+/9a) world reference, then I have to conclude that Drumtime is 9a! The word now passes to those who want to repeat the route…"
