The latest edition of the legendary "Calabria Rock" climbing meeting ended leaving those who took part with the excitement that only climbing can give and also the desire to return to this still unexplored, relatively unknown area. For many years the crags here were wrapped in an aura of mystery seeing that while much climbing action has concentrated on Sardinia and Sicily, in Calabria there was practically nothing!

The beautiful Monte Consolino crags are located in unique setting with a rich cultural heritage and for years the rocks have hosted beginners and experts alike. The limestone outcrops were bolted for the first edition of Calabria Rock in 2006, by a team of crazy climbers from the Lazio region, guided by Louis Filocamo and Bruno Vitale (both originally from Calabria). With the help of Luca Maspes, Graziano Montel, Riccardo Quaranta, P. Bongianni and the climbers belonging to the GAIA sports club the first crag was bolted, Gaia, as well as a couple of longer routes which joined those put up by Andrea Gallo during an earlier visit.

In the years the followed, bar the 2009 edition that was held at Frascineto - Eianina, splendid new sectors were bolted thanks to the likes of Massimo Faletti, L. Filocamo, Bruno Vitale, Rosario Cammara, Sergio Soraci, Lucky Carito and Salvatore Folinazzo. To date the crag offers routes from 4a - 8b and the potential for new routes, both sport and trad, is enormous.

Calabria Rock was, in line with the somewhat idealistic and out-dated spirit of those who organised it, a great and interesting meeting which resulted in new routes and also important cultural exchange of ideas. A particular highlight was Bruno Vitale's talk about the technical and historical aspect of this Calabrian climbing meeting.

We are committed to expanding the climbing potential at Stilo, in the hope that our dream can shine even brighter, and we would like to take this opportunity to that the local town council and the Stilo Oratory Youth Group for their generous hospitality and interest in this meeting.
