Behind The Scenes of Alex Honnold's 2011 Yosemite The Phoenix free solo

In 2011 Alex Honnold completed a bold ropeless ascent of The Phoenix (5.13) in Yosemite. In this video Reel Rock filmmaker Peter Mortimer explains this free solo from his exclusive point of view.

In 2011 Alex Honnold completed a bold ropeless ascent of The Phoenix, making what at the time was the hardest free solo ever in Yosemite Valley. A historic and iconic route, this fierce and extremely exposed crack climb high up at Upper Cascade Falls was first ascended by Ray Jardine and John Lakey in 1977 and is recognised as the first 5.13a in the States.

Honnold's 8-minute free solo was captured by his friend Peter Mortimer for Reel Rock. The American filmmaker now takes an intimate look behind the scenes at this ground-breaking ascent.
