The 2018 spring climbing season in the Himalayas has started with the bad news that 36-year-old mountaineer Simone La Terra has perished on Dhaulagiri (8167 m) in Nepal. According to Damber Parajuli, the director of Prestige Adventure that organized the expedition to the seventh highest mountain on earth, La Terra was inside his tent when this was swept away by a strong gust of wind yesterday morning. A rescue effort was mounted immediately, including a helicopter that searched the upper part of the mountain despite the bad weather. La Terra’s body was located this morning at about 6100 meters and transported to Kathmandu.

Simone La Terra had climbed five 8000ers - Shisha Pangma (2006), Broad Peak (2007), Gasherbrum II (2008), Cho Oyu (2009) and Manaslu (2011). In 2013 he had attempted Dhaulagiri with Polish Pawel Michalski.
