![]() On 8 October the Italian mountaineer Sergio Martini reached the summit of Shisha Pangma Central Peak, at 8013m the "lowest" 8000 meter peak in the world. Martini climbed from Camp 2 at 6800m to the summit in a single push, demonstrating his excellent himalayan form once again. Martini's solitary ascent occurred two days after that of fellow mountaineers Silvio Mondinelli and Mario Merelli, reported earlier. As is well known, Sergio Martini has already climbed all fourteen 8000m peaks (Everest in 1999 completed the list) without the use of supplementary oxygen. Martini's himalayan quest has continued since then, most recently with the publicised Shisha Pangma ascent last year together with Cesare Maetsri and Fausto De Stefani. The expedition had hoped to plant the "Flag of peace" on the summit, but was forced to turn back due to Maestri developing AMS. Now, one year later, Martini has finally managed to plant the flag on the summit.
