Major rockfall took place on famous Arête des Cosmiques in the Mont Blanc massif on Monday 29 August 2022. This follows the landslide the swept away the Fourche bivouac on Friday 26 August.
After losing a significant portion of its ridge in 2018, the Arête des Cosmiques in the Mont Blanc massif has once again been subject to rockfall. On Monday 29 August huge rocks tumbled circa 30 meters east of the popular ridge line down onto the glacier below. Fortunately no one was injured.
The rockfall was witnessed by various parties on the South Face of the Aiguille du Midi, including American climber Nick Lozica descending off Voie Rébuffat - Baquet, whose video is included below.
The rockfall activity, caused by the extended heatwave and ensuing permafrost degradation, follows the recent landslide that destroyed the Fourche bivouac on Friday 26 August.
