The new cable car connecting the Montenvers station with the Mer de Glace glacier above Chamonix in the Mont Blanc massif was opened officially yesterday, Saturday 3 February 2024. Located next to the historic rack-and-pinion railway station, the new lift leads directly down onto the glacier and therefore avoids the steps. Due to the fast and inexorable glacier retreat over 580 steps had in put in place in recent years.

Currently the cable car can be used uphill for those skiing the Vallée Blanche from 10.30am to 4pm, while it can only be used downhill by alpinists, from 10.30am to 11.30am. The Compagnie du Mont-Blanc has not yet announced the opening dates for tourists who want to visit the Grotte de Glace ice cave.
