di

On Wedndesday 22 July 2015 Dutch alpinist Martjin Seuren lost his life in a fall while climbing the Rochefort ridge in the Mont Blanc massif. He had been climbing with another alpinist and Ueli Steck, currently attempting the 82 peaks over 4,000 meters in the Alps in 80 days. With this ascent Seuren would have become the first Dutchman to climb all 4,000 meter peaks in the Alps.

Below is the post, published on Facebook, of famous Swiss alpinist Ueli Steck who announces the Martjin Seuren's death on Wednesday while negotiating the Aiguille de Rochefort ridge in the Mont Blanc massif. Seuren was on the route together with Steck and a third alpinist. He is reported to have fallen 300m. His body was located in a crevasse on the Italian side of the mountain.

"Dear Friends, I am deeply saddened by the tragic death of my colleague Martjin Seuren that happened yesterday Wednesday, July 22nd after a fall on Rochefortgrat. He would have been the first Dutchman to climb all the 82 Four-Thousand peaks in the Alps. I want to express my deepest condolences to Martjin’s family and friends. Out of consideration for the family I won’t add further comment on this tragic event and I ask you all to respect this as well. Ueli"

Martjin Seuren, born in 1983, had lived in Bern for various years. He was only the second Dutchman to have been admitted to the difficult Swiss Mountain Guides training scheme, and with this ascent he would have crowned his dream of climbing all 82 4000m summits in the Alps. His death is a great loss for Dutch mountaineering. Following the tragic accident, an online memorial has been set up.

Ueli Steck had been attempting hs #82summits project in which he hopes to climb all 82 4000ers in 80 days. On 19/07/2015 Steck still had to climb 27 peaks to complete the tour.
