Mountain Wilderness appeals against a planned development project at Malga Ciapela
![]() Once again our mountain slopes are about to covered in tarrmac and once again, the SOS appeal has been launched by the international organisation Mountain Wilderness. And, as is so often the case, the campaign concerns the Marmolda, the highest mountain in the Dolomites and one of the main symbols of wilderness protection worldwide. Mountain Wilderness has raised doubts about recent plans for a "Wellness and Sport Resort at the foot the mountain, which include two new hotels, various chalets, internal and external swimming pools and modifications to the existing infrastructure. Or, in other words, 146.849 cubic meters of new concrete at Malga Ciapela, for a total of 50 million euro. What is striking is that in its Habitats Directive the European Community defined the Queen of the Dolomites a "Site of Community Importance." There's no doubt that this needs to be safeguarded!!
