Makalu 2001, summit!
Giampaolo Corona of the the expedition Aquile di San Martino di Castrozza e Primiero reached the summit of Makalu on 14/05
![]() 15/05/2001 The Acquile have done it ! Yesterday on 14 May Giampaolo Corona reached the 8475m high summit of Makalu Himal, the fifth highest mountain in the world. His success is of course a great satisfaction for all expedition members, who are now safely (and happily) back at Base Camp: Renzo Corona, Narciso Simion, Mariano Lott, Tullio Simoni, Sebastiano Zagonel, Donato Zagonel, Giampaolo Corona, Gianfranco Dell'Antonia and Alessandro Rigobello. ![]() Twenty-five years have passed since the historic Aquile expedition to Dhaulagiri, and this second successful 8000m expedition is definitely something the entire San Martino di Castrozza e Primiero valley will want to celebrate, as they supported the expedition right from the outset. Giampaolo Coronas successful summit bid brings this years tally to 7, since 2 mountaineers from new Zealand reached the summit a few days ago, as did 3 mountaineers from Chile and Sherpa Lakpa Dorje, who therefore becomes the only person to have summited Makalu Himal twice.. Congratulations to all!
