According to news reports published by The Associated Press, the four Polish trekkers kidnapped by Maoist rebels in Nepal have now been freed. They are currently in Lukla from where they intend to continue their trek to Everest Base Camp.

The four trekkers had departed from Jiri for Lukla and were in an area in which the rebels are highly active. Normally tourists opt to fly directly to Lukla to start the trek towards Everest through a region guarded heavily by the Nepalese military.

The Maoist rebels usually ask for a "tax" of 5,000 rupees (US$70) to cross their territory, and at present it is not clear whether the Poles paid this sum.

According to the Associated Press 13000 people have died since the start of the conflict, while yesterday the BBC reported 6000 victims.
