They seem to defy the law of physics, those "corrugated spines" above the Tsirku Glacier in the Saint Elias massif on the borders of Alaska, British Columbia and Yukon. How can they be so steep, and nevertheless hold that immense mass of snow? This question has been asked by many. In March 2016 American snowboarder Ralph Backstrom and American skier Hadley Hammer teamed up with Swiss mountain guide - and one of the strongest and most audacious steep skiers in the world - Samuel Anthamatten to find out for themselves. There, in that inhospitable vastness described as skiing’s final frontier, almost everything is still to be discovered. If the mountains allow the ride.
