Achille Compagnoni, the Italian mountaineer who together with Lino lacedelli first set foot on the summit of K2 at 18.00 on 31 July 1954, died in Aosta two days ago.

On 11 June Iganzio Piuzzi died in Gemona aged 73. He was one of the greatest mountaineers in the period 1950 – 1970. His climbing companion Roberto Sorgato remembers him in the following interview.

On 20/07 the Italians Karl Unterkircher and Daniele Bernasconi reached the summit of Gasherbrum II (8035m) via the virgin North Face, climbing a beautiful route and resolving one of the most famous problems in the Himalaya.

At 9.45 local time on 28 July 2004, Mario lacedelli and Luciano Zardini reached the summit of K2, 8611m. They reached the top together with the Swiss Mountain Guide Michel Andre Wirdt, a Sherpa and and the Pakistani high altitude porter Mohamed Sanap Akam.

On 27 July 2004 at 7.15 local time Mario Dibona, Renato Sottsass, Marco Da Pozzo and Renzo Benedetti reached the summit of K2, 8611m. They reached the top of the second highest mountain in the world together with Mingma Sherpa and Thilen Sherpa.

At 13,30 CET Silvio Mondinelli and Karl Unterchirker reached the summit of K2, followed by Walter Nones, Michele Compagnoni and Ugo Giacomelli at 14.15 (17.15 local time).
