25th Banff Mountain Film Festival, the winners

'Mysterious Mamberamo', directed and produced by Pavol Barabas, wins Grand Prize at the Banff Mountain Film Festival 2000



The 25th edition of the celebrated Banff Mountain Film Festival 2000 came to a close on 5 November and was won by '
Mysterious Mamberamo'.
This Slovakian film, directed and produced by Pavol Barabas, documents a treacherous journey through the wild and unexplored Irian Jaya, otherwise referred to as West Papua in Indonesia.

Mysterious Mamberamo was one of the 40 finalists chosen from 213 entries from 24 different countries. The Jury, composed of Arlene Burns (U.S.A.), Mireille Chiocca (France), Giorgio Daidola (Italy), Gretel Ehrlich (U.S.A.), and Roger Vernon (Canada), awarded the following prizes

The 'Best Film on Climbing', sponsored by the Alpine Club of Canada was awarded to Bernard George's '
Annapurna, l'histoire d'une légende', which documents the historic 1950 first ascent of Annapurna. It had already received the Special Prize at this year's ALP/CERVINO International Film Festival.

'The Sahara’s Secret Garden', directed by Gauthier Flauder, depicts the hidden beauties of the Sahara Desert in northern Chad and was awarded the 'Best Film on Mountain Culture'.

The American
'Shishapangma – A Celebration of Life' by Michael Brown recounts the tragic expedition to Shishapangma where Dave Bridges and Alex Lowe lost their lives. It won the category 'Best Film on Mountain Sports'.

The 'Best Film on Mountain Environment' went to Rob Harrison-White's
'Mountain Rivals' which depicts the lives of a black eagle and a scavenger who live in the South African mountains. It had previously won the
Plateau Rosa (Festival Directors' choice) at this year's ALP/CERVINO International Film Festival.

The French
'Y2 sKi' by Didier Lafond and Dominique Perret won the 'Best Short Mountain Film', while the 'Best Mountain Fiction Film' was awarded to 'Premier de cordée and La grande crevasse' by Pierre-Antoine Hiroz and Edouard Niermens.

The 'Special Jury Awards' were assigned to '
The Dizzy Heights' Knights' by Fulvio Mariani and Gianluigi Quarti and to 'Yosemite – Ascending Rhythm', by Sterling Johnson and Ron Kauk.

The 'People's Choice Award' was won by the American film
'A Higher Calling' by Neal Michaelis.
