Italian Ice Cup - the results
Nadia Dimai wins second ever competition, Erik Svab and Alfred Dvorak joint first
The first stage of the Italian Ice Cup 2001 took place in Riva di Tures last weekend. Despite terrible weather affecting the entire alpine region the competition proved to be a success, thanks mainly to excellent organisation and route setting. 26 men and 14 women took part in Saturday's Qualification on a 22m high ice structure, comprised of two columns linked by a wooden panel for dry-tooling. Of the 10 women that qualified on the vertical stamina route, seven topped out. The men's round was comprised of two boulder routes: 6 minutes were allotted, an unlimited number of attempts permitted and the athletes had 6 minutes recovery time between one problem and the next. As for the women, 10 men qualified for Sunday's Final. Nadia Dimai, a Mountain Guide from Cortina, was the only athlete to top out on a complex women's Final. This was her second ever competition, (she placed second in last year's World Cup Cortina Ice Boulder) and Italian hopes are justifiably high for the upcoming Ice World Cup. Kirstin Buchmann from Germany placed second, while Monika Pellegrini from the South Tyrol placed third. Both the Italian Erik Svab and the Austrian Alfred Dvorak completed the overhanging 25m men's Final, a mix of traverses, dry-tooling sections and a steep overhang to finish joint first. Mauro Bubu Bole placed third. The competition circuit now moves on to the second and final round of the Italian Ice Cup at Lanzada on 10/11 February. The Ice World Cup 2001 gets underway in Pitztal (Austria) on 12/13 January and continues a week later in Val Daone (Italy) on 18/21 January. top: Nadia Dimai (photo PlanetMountain.com). bottom: Erik Svab (photo Marko Prezelj). > Cortina Ice Boulder 2000
