Watch Simon Bauer make first redpoint ascent of R.I.P, Wolfgang Güllich's trad Frankenjura masterpiece

The video of Simon Bauer making the first redpoint ascent of R.I.P, Wolfgang Güllich's trad masterpiece first ascended in 1986 at the Schellneckkopf in the Altmühltal in the Frankenjura, Germany.

In 1986, Wolfgang Güllich made the first ascent of R.I.P. on the Schellneckkopf in the Altmühltal in Germany's Frankenjura. Inspired by trips to East Germany's Elbsandstein and California's Yosemite valley, the 25-year-old had decided to climb with route with trad gear. In keeping with the ethics of those early days, he freed the crack Rotkreis - or yo-yo style, i.e. lowering to the ground after a fall, and restarting with the rope clipped to the previous highpoint.

In its almost 40 year history the climb has obviously been repeated, but as a matter of fact very rarely due to its difficulty, and always with pre-placed gear. On 13 August 2025 Simon Bauer made what is most likely to the first redpoint ascent of this classic, placing all the gear on lead.
