Melloblocco 2025: day 4

When Caroline Ciavaldini told me she was organising a workshop (female-focused, but not exclusive!) for this year's Melloblocco, I immediately embraced the idea with enthusiasm, volunteering as representative and interpreter for the group.

On Saturday at 11 a.m., under a warm sun bathing Val Masino and Val di Mello, we gathered at the La Sportiva stand for our first meeting. After introductions, Mina Markovič — three-time World Cup winner, European Champion, and climbing legend — led us through dynamic stretching under the village marquee. Then we set off toward the chosen climbing area, chatting the whole way, as tradition dictates ;-).

A long line of women wound through the forest. Among us were Yasmin, carrying her crash pad and her inner scars; Laura with her gentle spirit; Kat with her little dog; and Coralie, who had cycled all the way from Briançon on her bike. Within five minutes of walking, we were already friends.

The bouldering session was enlightening, fun, and motivating all at once. Zozo chalked up holds and footholds, Arthur showed us the moves, and by the end, one participant from Turin exclaimed, “I learned more in these two hours than in six months at the gym!” Another, breathless, admitted, “I never imagined bouldering could be this thrilling!” Credit goes to the exceptional coaches: Caroline and Mina, but also Salomé Romain, Siara Fabbri, and James Pearson.

A picnic for those of us (like me!) who were hungry, then sitting in a circle on crash pads to discuss the theme: “What’s the point of climbing in a women’s group?” Without hesitation or shame, everyone — women and men — freely shared their impressions and opinions.

One key takeaway? Often, when attempting a route, we have to claim our space in an environment where many men assume “girls don’t try the hard moves!” The solution? Assert ourselves with a smile, a lighthearted quip, and some humor, reminding everyone of our equal right to participate in the climbing/bouldering game.

She Rocks was simple yet profound. A heartfelt thanks to our incredible coaches - James included ;-) — and to all the participants, now friends. And to Irene and the entire La Sportiva team for believing in this magical workshop.

See you at the next edition, because yes, We Rock!
Love from Nicoletta xxx
