Iker Pou onsights 8c on Mallorca
38-year-old Basque sports climber Iker Pou has onsighted his first 8c, Guiris Go Home 8c at Mallorca in Spain.
It seems like only yesterday that Yuji Hirayama made the world’s first 8c onsight, but in actual fact White Zombie in the Baltzola Cave dates back to more than a decade ago! Ten years during which the level in sport climbing has risen relentlessly, with on-sights going past 8c+ to 9a, while redpoint routes have even touched the 9b+ mark.
But don’t be confused by these numbers, 8c is and remains an outstanding performance, even more so if climbed in the cleanest of styles. And that’s why we’re mentioning the recent ascent of Basque climber Iker Pou who, just the other day on the Spanish island of Mallorca, managed to join this still somewhat exclusive club of climbers capable of onsighting 8c. Evidently on great shape after four 8b+ and ten 8b onsights, at Las Perchas - Sierra de Tramuntana he has now managed to onsight the 8c Guiris Go Home. Not bad at all, especially if you consider the fact that Pou is now 38 years old!
