The magnificent crack climbing at Caspana, Atacama desert, Chile

The pace of this video - how else could it be? - is slower. Aimed at savoring the simple beauties in life. Like discovering how Chilean ancestors survived on the immense, sparsely populated Atacama desert plateau, famous for being the driest, non-polar desert in the world. And like exploring the magnificent crack climbing at Caspana, developed recently by Lucho Birkner, Mateo Barrenengoa, Pancho Herrera and Carlos Lastra Barros.

Lastra told planetmountain.com "The area is located circa an hour from San Pedro de Atacama. So far we have climbed only a dozen or so cracks, but the place has potential for much more. At first the area looks really flat, but in actual fact its a deep canyon which branches off into many directions. In some sections the sandstone is of excellent quality, in other less so… you know, for us it’s like we’re experiencing a real adventure."
