Tre Cime di Lavaredo, Ueli Steck and Michi Wohlleben enchain the 3 North Faces in winter

On Monday 17 March Swiss alpinist Ueli Steck and Germany's Michi Wohlleben climbed the three North Faces of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo in the Dolomites, via, the routes Cassin, Comici - Dimai and Innerkofler. The report about the first winter ascent of the North Face enchainement by Michi Wohlleben.

"We set off without high expectations. We simply wanted to see what we'd manage to achieve. In truth it was something really spontaneous." This is what Ueli Steck told Planetmountain while summing up he recent raid in the Dolomites, carried out last Monday together with the young German mountain guide Michi Wohlleben. An adventure that saw the two climb the three North Faces of the famous Tre Cime di Lavaredo in winter, via three ultra classic routes: first the Cassin route up Cima Ovest, then the Comici - Dimai up Cima Grande and then, to finish off, the Innerkofler up Cima Piccola with a north face start. All of this in under 16 hours.

"The key to our success was having great trust in each other while simul-climbing" explained Steck "and also the great conditions that day. We'd wanted to set off at 3:30am but there was simply too much wind so we lay in and started late, which meant that the first two routes weren't too cold. Otherwise it would have been much, much harder."

For the record, Steck had previously soled the Comici route while Wohlleben knew all three lines. Furthermore, the duo was helped by two friends who provided them with hot drinks and food. But these details, perhaps important even, pale into insignificance when compared to the time needed, those 15 hours and 42 minutes of vertical sprint. A time that is so astounding that it begs the question as to whether this is still connected in some way to the form of alpinism we knew until only recently, or whether this is the road to the future. We don't know. And in truth, neither does Steck. "I don't really know how to judge this. It just seemed so completely different from what I've done lately. Simply a great idea."

TRE CIME DI LAVAREDO NORTH FACE by Michi Wohlleben

On Monday 17 March Ueli Steck and I carried out the first winter Trilogy up the three North Faces by climbing the "Cassin" route up Cima Ovest, via Comici up Cima Grande and the Innerkofler route with a north face start up Cima Piccola. The three classic North Face routes.

I'd had this project in mind for the last two years but I'd never managed to make it work. Last Tuesday 11 March I wrote Ueli an SMS to ask whether he'd be interested in trying the Trilogy, and so we met on Sunday for a pizza at Misurina and drove on to the Auronzo hut. We set off at 8:30 am on Monday up the Cassin route, and although we'd planned on 6 - 12 hours, we reached the summit after only 3 hours 37minutes... we were both pretty surprised. By simul-climbing and making running belays we saved a lot of time and made fast progress. We needed an hour for the descent. Our friend Lukas Binder was at the col between Cima Ovest and he'd melted some water for us. We had a short rest, ate and drank and then descended to the start of the Comici route. We soloed up the pedestal and the first pitch and then things got going again. We climbed simultaneously and also made extremely long pitches and were really quick up to the ledge, while this slowed us down a bit due to the vast amount of snow as we traversed across it. Nevertheless we managed to reach the summit in last daylight after 4 hours and 47 minutes; the atmosphere up there was absolutely unique and we were fairly chuffed.

This was followed by the descent, not particularly easy in the dark, but we reached the start of Innerkofler at about 21:00 by descending to the col between Cima Grande and Cima Piccola. Florian Rex welcomed us with warm tea and coke.

We dressed up warmly and set off at about 21:30 up the North Face of Cima Piccola. I don't know the name of the line we followed up the the north col, but this offered classic alpine mixed terrain, with a small technical section to breach a large cornice. We followed the Innerkofler route from the col to the summit and reached this at 0:20, admittedly pretty exhausted. We shook hands and were both pretty happy.

We'd actually reckoned with a total time somewhere in the region of 30 hours, perhaps even more, but in the end we needed circa 16 hours (15 hours 42 minutes)... we were fairly surprised... but sometimes there are simply perfect days when everything slips into place - conditions were good, the team was good, we were strong mentally. We stumbled in to the Auronzo hut at 2:00am, woke up Florian and opened a bottle of superb wine dating back to 2006 and listened to "Days like this" from the Toten Hosen on Ueli's iPhone.
