Echoes in the Dark established on Cerro Cota (Torres del Paine, Patagonia) by Kosuke Kawachi, Toru Nakajima, Yudai Suzuki
Japanese climbers Kosuke Kawachi, Toru Nakajima and Yudai Suzuki have made the first ascent of Echoes in the Dark, an 800m route on the east face of Cerro Cota the the Torres del Paine massif in Patagonia.
The 20-pitch outing shares the first 6 pitches with Osa ma non troppo, established in 2007 by the Italians Michele Cagol, Rolando Larcher, Fabio Leoni and Elio Orlandi, before branching off to the right and continuing indipendently to the summit.
The trio fixed the first 4 pitches, prior to their push carried out capsule style from 5 - 9 March 2026. Four portaledge bivy camps were used ebfore reaching the summit and abseiling back down the route.
"Unknown terrain, endless obstacles, unforgettable climbing" is how Suzuki summed up the ascent of Echoes in the Dark, before explaining "It was our last chance after waiting out the bad weather. We overcame countless difficulties: a miraculously connected series of hard aid pitches, a 20‑meter runout squeeze chimney, treacherously loose flake sections, an ice chimney climbed in rock shoes, and more. It was the most fulfilling climbing expedition imaginable."
