Mathéo Jacquemoud embarks on his Alpine Traverse from Vienna to Nice on skis and bike
After months of preparation, three days ago 35-year-old French ski mountaineer Mathéo Jacquemoud set off on his L’Intégrale des Alpes project which aims to traversing across the entire Alps from Vienna to Nice on skis and without motorised transport.
If everything goes according to plan, the mountain guide will cross 9 massifs as he travels for 30 days from east to west via Austria, Italy, Switzerland and France. Obviously prevailing conditions will dictate precisely when and where he will travel, but a rough estimate sees him tackling 1000 km on skis with 80,000m vertical, and 950 km by bike and 20.000 vertical.
The entire trip has been broken down in 28 stages and the first were dispatched with quickly: Vienna by bike to ascend the first summit, Hoher Dachstein (2995m), before tagging Sonnblick (3106m) and then the highest mountain in Austria, Grossglockner (3798m).
The former ski mountaineering world champion will be joined by various friends along the way and his progress can be followed on his Instagram account.
