The organisers of the Piolet d’Or mountaineering award have published the 'big list' of most significant and innovative climbs carried out in 2023. The honoured ascents will receive the Piolets d'Or 2024 award during the celebration at San Martino di Castrozza (Italy) from 8 - 11 December 2024.

From 19-24 August Swiss alpinists Silvan Schüpbach and Peter von Känel made the first ascent of renaissance, a big new climb on the North Face of the Eiger in Switzerland. The pair climbed the 1220m line without the use of bolts.

On 28 May 2021 British rock climber Craig Matheson made the first ascent of Hard Cheese at Bright Beck Cove in Langdale, UK. Graded E10 7a, this is a major addition to British trad climbing.
