The kings and queens of Melloblocco 2023

Just as Charles was being crowned King of the United Kingdom, in Val Masino and Val di Mello the kings and queens were not some predestined individuals, but thousands of climbers who had answered the Melloblocco call. Instead of the Scepter they had a toothbrush, instead of the Holy Anointing Oil liquid chalk, instead of the Coronation Chair, crashpads. And instead of the medieval Crown, a helmet, for those who had chosen to repeat a classic multipitch and savour the valleys from above. A unique spectacle unfolded beneath their climbing shoes: a valley split in half by a crystalline river, and lush meadows and cool woods that all day long swarmed with climbers who enjoyed (and suffered) indomitable in their own little kingdom.

The numbers speak for themselves: while 1800 climbers officially registered between Thursday and Friday, on Saturday this number increased to 2400. An impressive figure, in a league of its own compared to all other climbing meetings, but which the valley managed to welcome with open arms. Thanks also to the climbers themselves who, once again, demonstrated utmost respect and love for this pristine habitat. This is something which nowadays can no longer be taken for granted, and precisely for this very reason it should be celebrated. Just like Saturday's coronation.
