As the big first day of the XXI Marathon of the Glaciers gets closer, the adrenaline is starting to pump: the 300 teams entered in the race are completing their training while the Mezzalama Trophy Foundation is working to ensure that the race over the Monte Rosa massif from Breuil-Cervinia to Gressoney is a spectacular success.

The Mezzalama Trophy, the last race of the season in the Grande Course circuit, has strong ties with its own history and a keen interest in the events that in the course of its twenty-one editions have affected the area in which the race is held. In the previous edition, to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the conquest of the Matterhorn, the Glacier Marathon was raced in reverse with respect to the usual course, finishing in Breuil-Cervinia right in the shadow of the “Gran Becca”. On 22 April, the 100th anniversary of the Great War will be marked by a performance on the part of the famous military band (“Fanfara”) of the Val d’Ossola Bersaglieri, who will accompany the 900 competitors along the Cervinia footpath.

But as well as following history, the Mezzalama Trophy has always stayed abreast of the times, proving itself to be a dynamic and modern competition.
The introduction of a competition designed especially for the youth categories (cadets and juniors), due to take place on Friday 21 April, and live streaming covering every stage of the race are just some of the aspects that make the Marathon of the Glaciers one of a kind.

Thanks to the extraordinary success of the last edition, with an audience of over 53,000 people from more than 100 different countries, the Mezzalama Trophy will once again be streamed live on the Glacier Marathon’s official channels www.trofeomezzalama.it, YouTube and facebook.

Coverage will start at 8.30 a.m. on 22 April with a running commentary by Eurosport commentator and the Mezzalama Trophy’s official ‘voice’ since 2005, Silvano Gadin. Silvano will be broadcasting from the finish line in Gressoney La Trinité in the company, in turn, of Stefania Belmondo (two Olympic golds and four world champion titles in cross-country skiing), Arianna Follis (world cross-country skiing champion, Olympic bronze medallist and winner of two editions of the Mezzalama Trophy) and Bruno Brunod (two-time world skyrunning champion).

All the key moments of the race (the start, arrival at the first checkpoint, overtakes and catch-ups) will be broadcast during streaming, as well as various interviews with the protagonists before the start.

Gadin will also be able to link up with the fixed camera at the Quintino Sella hut where Francesco De Fabiani (winner of both the 2014/15 and 2015/16 cross-country World Cup for under-23s) and Paolo Riva (member of the Italian cross-country team’s technical staff) will be on tap to provide the latest updates coordinated by the journalist Maurizio Torri.

Marco Camandona, an Alpine guide from the Valle d’Aosta and long-standing friend of the Mezzalama Trophy, will be the “wild card”: connected by phone, he will move around the course to bring us live coverage of the competitors’ feats. Live streaming will terminate with the arrival of the first women’s teams, expected to be around 11.30 a.m.
