After last year’s success, the World Cup circuit returns to Lecco on 22-23 September for its second stage in 2001.

After last year’s success, the World Cup circuit returns to Lecco on 22-23 September for its second stage in 2001. This event, organised by the Ragni di Lecco, is as important as ever due to the almost two month break in the World Cup. But fresh from the World Championships in Winterthur and the Rock Master in Arco, the athletes are bound to be on top form.

All the best will attend. Tomas Mrazek, Yuji Hirayama and Christian Bindhammer (winners at Rock Master last weekend) will be up against the likes of GÃ©rome Pouvreau, recently crowned World Champion and Alexander Chabot, winner here at Lecco last year. FranÃ§ois Legrand seemed on good form at Arco, as did Cristian Brenna and Dino Lagni – the list of likely candidates is long and the battle for first place will not be easy.

The women’s event will be spearheaded by Muriel Sarkany and Martina Cufar, joint victors at the Rock Master and the latter recent World Champion. They will be up against Liv Sansoz, winner at Lecco and World Cup winner last year, who now makes her return to competitions in 2001.

Alexander Chabot and Martina Cufar currently lead the provisional Wolrd Cup ranking after the first event in Chamonix on 1 July. Will the likes of young and powerful Pouvreau and Mrazek dictate the competition, or will Hirayama, Brenna, Lagni, Bindhammer and Legrand let experience count?
