Ice World Cup 2002, Open at Kirov

The Ice World Cup 2002 starts at Kirov today
Minus 27 degrees! That’s how cold it is in Kirov at the moment, where the Ice World Cup has finally got underway for 2002. Sixty athletes have ventured deep into Russia to compete in this third World Cup, and some of the best are currently climbing in the qualifying rounds. Will Gadd, winner of the first ever IWC, is joined by the likes of Daniel Dulac, last year’s winner, Mauro Bubu Bole and Stefan Husson. Mi Sun Go, a veteran of the sports climbing competition circuit, has decided to take part in the event, together with Liv Sansoz and Ines Papert, winner in 2001.

Yesterday’s Open took place on two identical routes: the Canadian Will Gadd and the Frenchman Anthony Lamiche set their mark and qualified for the Semifinal ahead of, amongst others, Harald Berger (AUS), Aljaz Anderle (SLO), Urs Odermatt (SUI), Bubu Bole (ITA),Stephane Husson and Daniel Du Lac (FRA).

In the Women’s event the defending champion Ines Papert climbed highest, ahead of Ksenia Sdobnikova (RUS) and Kirsten Buchmann (GER). Liv Sansoz from France qualified in 6th place.
