For the second time this season Angelika Rainer from Italy won a stage of the Ice Climbing World Cup presented by The North Face. "The structure at Champagny," commented Rainer, "is beautiful, with lots of overhanging ice, I always enjoy climbing here and manage to climb my best. This is the only place I’d never won before" added Rainer "so this victory is very special."

Second place went to Swiss climber Petra Klinger, someone to look out for in the young and emerging Swiss team! Third place went to the equally promising young Korean HanNaRai Song who fell off the overhanging ice just before the the final panel, while seventh went to the other Korean, Shin WoonSeon, winner in Rabenstein a week a go.

Thanks to this victory Angelika Rainer has now taken the lead in the provisional ranking, despite having competed in one stage less than the other athletes (the South Tyrolean didn’t take part in the Korean stage of the World Cup as she was in the US where she won the Ouray international master).

In the men’s event victory deservedly went to Korea’s Park HeeYong, finally after four consecutive victories by Maxim Tomilov who placed seventh in France after falling off the overhanging rice. Second place went to incredibly talented 17-year-old Swiss Yannick Glatthard who topped out just twenty seconds slower than the Korean. Third place went to Alexey Tomilov, while fourth went to another Swiss youngster, 19-year-old Kevin Huser. Maxim Tomilov continues to lead the overall standings and despite his impressive margin, we’ll have to wait for the outcome of the sixth stage in Kirov in Russia to see who wins the overall World Cup.

The speed event was won by Russia’s Vladimir Kartashev who beat Vlad Golub and Alexey Tomilov; the female competition was won by Ekaterina Feokistova who beat Natalya Kulikova and Julia Oleynikova.
