Goldfinger, International Master, Brussels

François Legrand and Martina Cufar victorious in Belgium
An International Master took place in Brussels on Saturday 18 March. Sixteen male and ten female athletes were invited to compete in this one day event.

The first round, an on-sight, took place at 13.00. One of the first to be eliminated was the Italian Cristian Brenna due to his foot slipping. The second round, another on-sight, took place at 16.00. Other surprise non-qualifiers included the current World Champion Dino Lagni and the Bindhammer brothers, who all failed to hold the two-handed dyno at the start of the route.

The best five men and women qualified for the third and final round, which took place on the second route; François Legrand just failed to top out, as did Muriel Sarkany. This was not enough to secure her victory as the final result was based on performance in all three rounds, and in the end she placed third. Martina Cufar, the only athlete to complete a route, placed first, ahead of Annatina Schultz, second.

Winner of the men’s event was, as so often, François Legrand, followed by François Petit, second and Simon Vandeler, third.

Congratulations to the organisers. The post competition meal and Sunday’s sight seeing trip around Brussels, escorted by the 'Guardian Angels', also proved a great success.
